The idea behind this week's comic started when I questioned how parents brag about their kids in a world where 12-year-olds can forgo school in favor of the challenging the Pokemon league. "Oh, your kid's an honor student? Well everyone in the country knows my kid; he beat the Elite Four and now everyone has have to face him to be the best."
The rest of the decals were a natural evolution (no pun intended) of the honor student bumper sticker. For panel two I wanted to do a more straight parody of the Ichthys (aka: 'The Jesus fish"), with the traditional shape for Magikarp and then a simplified Gyarados beside it. It turns out it's really hard to simplify Gyarados down that far, still be able to tell it's Gyarados and put a word readably inside of that shape. Plus, Bulbasaur is awesome (Charmander fans everywhere are ready to fight over this comment).
Plus, I mean, cars have to exist in the Pokemon universe. Right? There was that mysterious truck in Vermillion City. There's a moving truck at the start of Generation III. A few other assorted references. I can only assume playing as a 10 year old is what makes these things so unimportant that it never comes up. Bike away!
And wow, it's April. If you missed out on my April Fools gag, you can (at least temporarily) see it over here.
Being that it's April, that also means there's only one week left until Anime St. Louis! I hope to see you guys there!
